Understanding the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the opioid overdose crisis (NYU Big Events)

PI(s): Magdalena Cerdá, NYU Grossman School of Medicine

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the correlation between rises in COVID-19 hospitalizations and death rates and an increased risk of overdose among PCORnet® patients. Additionally, the study seeks to determine the role that public health and economic policies enacted during the COVID-19 pandemic played in explaining whether a rise in community COVID-19 burden contributed to a rise in overdose rates. Furthermore, this research investigates whether the impact of the pandemic on overdose incidence is dependent upon the socioeconomic, social, and policy characteristics of the community prior to the onset of the pandemic.
