PCORnet Highlighted in Medical Care

The February 2026 special edition of Medical Care that is focused on PCORnet featured an article illustrating the role of PCORnet in innovative clinical trial design. Dr. David Williams, PaTH Site Principal Investigator at the University of Michigan, served as senior author on this paper. By highlighting the various study archetypes (Observational-retrospective, observational-prospective, pragmatic clinical trials, and registries and platform trials), the authors show how PCORnet resources can be leveraged to answer a variety of clinical questions. Delving into nine large PCORnet studies - a distinguished subset of research studies that meets specific criteria and serve as models of patient-centered research - the article demonstrates the various ways in which PCORnet‘s Common Data Model, patient and partner engagement resources, and other tools can be used to assess outcomes with that are relevant to patients and their caregivers. The article reports that the most common therapeutic area of focus in PCORnet studies has been cardiovascular, followed by infectious disease and metabolic disorders. Also noted is the potential to expand into new areas, such as rare diseases, behavioral health, pain management, and maternal and pediatric health.
